The Signs of the Times James C. Guy
Many people tell us how all the bad things that are happening in our world are pointing to the fact that Christ will SOON come again. However, let’s see what THE BIBLE SAYS about the “signs of the times.”
First of all, the “last days” did not begin in the 1900's, but shortly after Christ’s death and resurrection. In Acts 2:16-17, we see that the last days began THEN, not in our time.
Second, many of the signs that people attribute to the second coming of Christ are based on figurative language and the signs given in Matthew 24 and Luke 21. However, if we read these chapters, we see that the signs He was talking about referred to the destruction of Jerusalem (which took place in A.D. 70), not the signs of the second coming of Christ. (See Luke 21:20ff). Jesus DID speak of the second coming of Christ, but there were TWO questions asked. One was what are the signs of the destruction of Jerusalem, and the other was the signs of His second coming. (Matthew 24:1-3; Luke 21:5-7). After He gave the signs for the destruction of Jerusalem, He told them that there were no “signs” for the coming of the Lord except to BE READY. In Matthew 24:36, He says, “of that day and hour no one knows...” and that as it happened in the days of Noah it will happen SUDDENLY in the end — with no warning. II Peter 3:10 says, “The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night” and the Earth will then be destroyed. He goes on to say in verse 11 & 14 that since it will be sudden and that will be the end, that we should be ready. That’s the whole point. We don’t have to know WHEN, we just need to be READY when it happens.
We don’t need signs, we need to OBEY GOD AND BE READY (see Matthew 16:1-4; Luke 11:29-32; and Luke 16:27-31). Men have been looking at world events throughout all of history as the “signs of the times.” But, millions have died not being ready for when it actually gets here. Are you ready?
