Looking For A Church James C. Guy
Remember “Here’s the church, here’s the steeple, open the door and see all the people?” Actually, there is no difference between the church and the people. Too many people have the wrong idea of what church is. When we look for a church, we often look for one that our family or friends belong to, one that will “meet our needs,” one that keeps us interested (entertained), or one that has a lot of things for us and our kids to do. We want a church that fits US.
THE BIBLE SAYS the church is not just an organization designed for our enjoyment. It is the body of Christ according to Ephesians 1:22-23 & Colossians 1:24. I Corinthians 12:12-13 tells us that each individual Christian is a small part of the whole body of Christ which is the church. It is not a meeting or group in a particular building.
Second, THE BIBLE SAYS that we are to be baptized into the body of Christ. Many people are baptized to join a church, rather than to be baptized into the body of Christ. Again, in I Corinthians 12:12-13 it says that we all are in one body IF we are baptized into that body. If we have been baptized in God’s way, we are not baptized to JOIN a particular church. Acts 2:38 & 47 tell us that we are ADDED to the body (the church) by God when we are baptized into Christ (Galatians 3:27).
Finally, we need to realize that God is not pleased with the fact that there are many different churches. That’s not the way He intended for it to be. In John 17:20-21 Jesus prayed that all who come to Him would be ONE as He and the Father were one. Christ is one (Galatians 3:16).
Many in our culture look for what fits US, or what WE want. Instead, we should be looking for what fits the standard of GOD — for what HE wants for us.
