It's Your Move

It’s Your Move

James C. Guy
Have you ever wondered why God doesn’t just MAKE every sinner obey Him? Have you prayed for God to save someone, only to find yourself wondering why He hasn’t done it? Or, perhaps you yourself have wondered why God doesn’t lead YOU toward Him. Maybe you’re waiting for a “sign” from God before you make the decisions you need to make in you life. Why doesn’t God move you toward Him if He wants you to be His child?

The answers can be found in what THE BIBLE SAYS. You see, too many people fail to do what God wants them to do because they believe they should wait for God to directly lead them to do it. This comes from a somewhat common belief called predestination that basically says that a person can only come to God if God first causes him to come. This is part of what is known as Calvinism which was originally formulated by Augustine many years ago. But, as always, let’s see what THE BIBLE SAYS about predestination and your ability to come to Him if YOU choose.

The basic idea behind predestination is that God has chosen some to be saved, and others not to be. However, if we look at II Peter 3:10, THE BIBLE SAYS that God is “longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” If God only chooses SOME to be saved, then this verse is wrong. THE BIBLE SAYS he does not show favoritism to anyone (Acts 10:34-36). Also, I John 2:2 says that Jesus paid the price for the sins of the WHOLE WORLD. That doesn’t mean everyone in the whole world will be saved. It means that ANYONE who does what God says to be saved will be (see Matthew 7:13-14).

Another idea behind predestination is that man is so sinful that he cannot make a move toward God on his own. It is true that man is sinful, and that we all sin (Romans 3:23). However, the Bible repeatedly calls us to come to Him. It is up to us to make the decision. For example, Hebrews 2:3 says that we will not escape if WE neglect salvation. We are the ones who neglect God. God does not neglect us. In fact, God has done MORE than His share. By sending His Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sins, He made His move toward us (Romans 5:6-11). That’s why we call it AMAZING GRACE. He has also given us His word which tells us everything we need to know about HOW to come to Him.

Ephesians 1:5 does mention predestination, but it is predestination for salvation in Christ. In verse 4 we see that it means God had a plan for man to be saved even before he sinned. That’s the kind of God He is.

God is not willing that you nor anyone else be lost. He made the greatest move anyone could make. Now it’s your move. What are you waiting for?
