Hell Is Not Satan's Home

James C. Guy

Most of us probably grew up with a picture of a red man with a pitchfork walking around the flames in hell. We don’t like to talk about hell. It has even become a dirty word to say. But, we need to consider it in light of our own lives. Let’s see what THE BIBLE SAYS hell really is and what it really means to Satan.

First, hell is a real place of torment. It is more than the grave or physical death. Hell is called the “second death” but it is a spiritual death that the lost must suffer. In Luke 16:23, the rich man found himself in Hades, and “being IN TORMENTS...” Then, Revelation 20:14 says that in the day of judgment, Death and Hades will be cast into the lake of fire (hell). So, hell is REAL, and hell is a place of punishment.

Second, hell is forever. In Mark 9:46, THE BIBLE SAYS that hell is “where the fire is not quenched,” Revelation 20:10 says that those in hell “will be tormented day and night FOREVER AND EVER.” And, II Thessalonians 1:9 calls it “EVERLASTING DESTRUCTION...” So, hell is an ETERNAL place of punishment for those who are lost.

Third, hell is not the home of the devil. Not yet, anyway! We need to be aware that Satan lives and moves among us trying to tempt us and turn us to his evil ways. II Corinthians 4:3-4 calls the devil “the god of this age“the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” However, hell is the place of punishment for ALL evil doers. II Peter 2:4 says that ANGELS who do not obey God are cast down to hell, and Revelation 20:10 says that SATAN will also be punished right along with those whom he deceived.

Finally, hell is a way of life. We must choose to obey God and live, or to disobey and die (Romans 6:16). Jesus said there are only two ways. One leads to hell, the other leads to heaven (Matthew 7:13-14). Which will you choose?
