Guns Don't Kill People, People Kill People
James C. Guy
Itís not a new argument. I remember it when I was a child. Though Iím not that old, I donít recall there being the same level of violence as today. But, even then, I used to see bumper stickers that read, "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." The argument is about gun control. How far should the government go in controlling or even removing guns from the hands of its citizens in an effort to protect them from killing one other?
Well, I think I have the answer. The answer is no newer than the problem: "Guns donít kill people, people kill people." This is not a political issue, but a moral one. I like what J.C. Watts (a U.S. Senator / politician) said following the inauguration of Bill Clinton. He said that no laws or other efforts of the government can change the hearts of men. Only God can do that. How true!
It is the evil heart that commits murder, and any other sinful act of man upon other men. It is the heart of man that must change, not the weapons which he uses. Although a valid argument might be made for some gun control, this will in no way solve the problems that the government hopes to solve.
The problem goes way back even to nearly the beginning of time. I doubt that Cain killed Abel with an AK-47. I doubt he did it even with a single shot 22 pistol. But, he DID kill Abel. Why? How? Not with the weapon he used, but with a heart of jealousy and evil. People are murdered in prison all the time with "homemade" weapons. Interestingly, Godís law did not place restrictions on weapons, but simply said, "You shall not kill" (Exodus 20:13) and taught kindness to others.
I have a better suggestion for the government. How about allowing prayer back in schools (without a fight). How about outlawing abortion, homosexual favortism, and other things that devalue mankind. How about outlawing the teaching that man came from monkeys. If we came from monkeys, whatís to prevent us from acting like them? How about putting God back in the place that man now holds himself. Is it true: "In God We Trust???"
For the church, how about standing for right. How about praying (in school and elsewhere). How about preaching the gospel that CAN change the hearts of man. It is the gospel that is the power of God unto salvation. (Romans. 1:16). How about teaching our children (and adults) absolute truth, love for man, and for God. Instead of moms "marching" on the capital, maybe moms, dads, and youth alike should be "marching" to the altar of the Almighty God. Quit letting culture rule us, and start letting God rule our culture.
Laws canít change people. Only God can do that, and only when man will let Him.
