Parents, you ARE making a difference!
James C. Guy
I believe in the power of preaching and teaching. Otherwise, I wouldn’t waste my life and my time as a preacher. I also believe in free-will and that no matter what we might teach our youth, they are still free to make the wrong choices (and often do).
But who do you think has the greatest influence on our kids? Some might say the media. Others would likely say friends. Both are definitely influential, but not the most influential. A recent study published in the AFA Journal (January 2001) asked youth who had the most influence on them concerning their decisions about sex. Only 11 % said their religious beliefs. Ironically, this was the same percentage as the media (11%). Friends got 30%, but guess who got the most? Parents (37%)! That’s right, even though we may not realize it, we DO influence our kids in their decisions. In other words, our kids are listening more than they might like for us to think they are.
Parents need to bring their kids to church regularly. They are positively influenced by it (Hebrews 3:13; 10:24-25). We need to help them choose good friends (I Corinthians 15:33), though we can’t really pick them for them. We need to be careful what we allow our kids to watch and hear in the media (Matthew 6:22-23). But, most of all, we need to be a good example and “bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).
Believe it or not, you DO influence your kids. The question is, WHAT are you teaching them and WHAT EXAMPLE are you setting for them? YOU have the greatest influence on them. Teach and lead them in the ways of Christ. It will make a difference!
